Our rapidly warming world has another high-profile victim — lakes.
An alarming new study says that freshwater lakes are warming at more than twice the pace of the oceans, and Lake Superior is the second-fastest warming lake studied, behind Sweden’s Lake Fracksjon. Lakes that are covered with ice in winter, like most Canadian lakes, are warming twice as fast because the lakes are increasingly ice-free earlier and for longer periods. “By the time you get to summer, there is a longer period of open ice and more time for lakes to warm faster,” Sharma said. “One of the questions raised is whether increased lake surface warming rate corresponds with lake evaporation rates.” Climate and social scientists have long warned that global warming will lead to conflicts, especially over water supplies, a potential future avenue for more research, Read said.

The quake that rocked Chile on Wednesday was five times more energetic than the one that devastated Nepal back in April. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake witnessed failings on the part of the monitoring network and the system for alerting people to the imminent tsunami threat. The authorities were quick to issue tsunami alerts keen to avert a repeat of the slow response to the 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010, which devastated large areas of the country.
