GARLAND, TEXAS—At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in strong tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area and caused substantial damage this weekend, while 13 people died in flooding in the Midwest.
“This is a huge impact on our community and we’re all suffering,” Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said of the community about 32 kilometres northeast of Dallas, where eight people died, 15 were injured and about 600 structures, mostly single-family homes, were damaged. At least three people who died were found in vehicles, said Barineau, who also noted that some cars appeared to be thrown from the interstate, though it wasn’t known whether that was the case for the people found in the vehicles.

A tornado tore through a southwestern Ontario community Sunday night, ripping the roof off a bungalow, damaging several police cars, and knocking down trees and power lines, Environment Canada says. Koumarelas said she did not see the actual funnel clouds, but did see the collateral damage to trees and structures including a nearby chicken barn. Officials in Wellington County say the tornado caused damage in the town of Minto and Wellington North Township, but they have received no reports of injuries.
The mayor of North Wellington, Andy Lennox, met with some of the hardest hit residents and said the storm caused extensive damage. “It would be safe to say it will be in the millions of dollars.” More than 25,000 Hydro One customers were without power Monday morning as a result of the extreme storms that swept through the province.

A severe weather system that tracked its way through Southern Ontario early Sunday evening cut power to thousands of homes and forced the cancellation of a major Toronto music festival. Swooping in from east of Lake Simcoe to Toronto toward the Kitchener-Waterloo area, the storms prompted warnings for Toronto, Hamilton, Belleville, the Kawarthas and the Halton-Peel and Durham-York regions. Toronto Hydro noted outages near Casa Loma and Flemingdon Park. The outages were spread over an area from Lake Huron to Toronto. Environment Canada issued tornado warnings for many areas at one point late Sunday afternoon, but subsequently downgraded them to severe thunderstorm warnings in most areas.

ISLAMABAD—Heavy monsoon rains and flash floods have killed 110 people in Pakistan and 108 people in India, officials said Saturday, as forecasters warned of more rain in the coming days and troops raced to evacuate people from deluged areas.
The annual monsoon season has struck hard across the region, leaving people to wade through rushing water in towns and villages across Pakistan and in Indian-controlled areas of Kashmir, where authorities say they are seeing some of the worst flooding in decades. He said another 38 people died in the Pakistan’s portion of Kashmir and 11 died in northern Gilgit Baltistan province.

The storm dropped snow from the Gulf Coast to New England. Museums remained closed in Washington, and the House of Representatives postponed votes until February, citing the storm’s impact on travel.
Authorities cautioned against unnecessary driving, airline schedules were in disarray and commuter trains will be delayed or cancelled for many as the work week begins after a storm that dumped near record snows on the densely populated Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON—After being paralyzed earlier this week by just 2.5 centimetres of snow, America’s capital is about to go toe-to-toe with a heavyweight snowstorm. A blizzard watch has been posted from Virginia to Long Island, including Washington and New York, for a storm that threatens to bring high winds and heavy snow starting Friday and lasting through the weekend. Philadelphia could receive almost as much, and New York may see 15 to 30 centimetres, Patrick Burke, a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Md., said Thursday. In New York, the heaviest accumulations will come on Saturday, which is when Boston may get some snow as well.
